Most agencies will want to keep the following information secret, or at least undisclosed, as if it is some covert information that you don’t need to know about. But we want to share with you how we go about delivering results for our clients – our design methodology, if you will – to educate and share how best we can work with you in using design to enhance and elevate your business. Be it your corporate image, website, social media portfolio, offline design appearance or advertising, to mention a few.
Many people – and therefore, companies – go about things is various different ways. Ask 25 people to give you an idea of how they would undertake a certain task, and you might get 25 different answers. The same is true for ‘creative’ companies. There are many ways to use the creative process. Sometimes, lightening strikes, and the first idea is the clearest, greatest and most effective option. Other times, the eureka moment comes only after hours of gruelling brainstorming. With the dross of early ideas firmly put out of the way, you work through to get to the golden stuff.
It’s easy to forget that there are no wrong answers in the creative process – just some that are much more effective. The answers that lead to the best solutions rarely come easily.
So, is there any structure that can help? How do we come up with the best ideas, and avoid the rest?
Here at IMIDG DESIGN, we have built upon years of experience dealing with clients to create the following methodology – our 8 steps of how we like to structure our workflow and projects.
STEP 1 – DEFINE THE PROBLEM
No effective solution can be created without first identifying the issues at hand. What is the client problem / requirement? In simple terms, it could be as easy as: “increase awareness within our market”. An initial scoping meeting is the best way to listen to you and your concerns.
STEP 2 – COLLECT INFORMATION
Analysis and research is a key component to our workflow. Our clients industries vary widely, which is nice for us as we get to work across a wide spectrum of fields. We endeavour to find out as much information on their market, users, current strengths, current weaknesses, competitors, current trends, long-lasting strategic processes etc. which all helps form a clear picture of how we can add value to their company.
STEP 3 – BRAINSTORM & ANALYSE IDEAS
The ‘creative’ part. If we started here, we might come up with some adequate strategies. But by taking the time and energy to follow through on the previous two steps, our knowledge and awareness enhance our ability to create. We start the process with an open mind. As mentioned earlier, there are no wrong answers, but some are so much better than others!
STEP 4 – DEVELOP SOLUTIONS
Refining these creative ideas into solid solutions, and putting thought into why they would work, is the next step. Having the ‘big picture’ in mind is essential. There have been many examples – especially in the advertising world – of great ideas executed poorly leading to disappointing results.
STEP 5 – GAIN INSIGHTFUL FEEDBACK
Discussion and communication in-house helps us to get a fresh perspective on what we’ve produced. Often, asking someone not immediately connected to the project gives us insight and fresh eyes on decisions that can affect the entire workflow. At other times, it highlights points that we’ve not even thought about. Great ideas can come from anywhere.
STEP 6 – IMPROVE / REFINE DESIGN
Further refinement occurs, improving the selected solutions to a stage where we are happy and confident to show you, our client.
STEP 7 – PRESENT TO CLIENT
We present our work to you, explaining the rational and thought process behind the ideas. We discuss these in detail with you, and take on board your feedback. This step is very important to us. We want to work in partnership with you, and take on board all that you have to say.
STEP 8 – FINALISE AMENDMENTS AND COMPLETE PROJECT
We take your feedback, analyse it, incorporate it in the final versions of our work, and deliver the completed project to you.
The above steps aren’t rules to be obeyed, and boxes to be ticked off when complete. But they can act as a formal guide to help focus on what is important – producing great work for clients who contact us and ask for our help.
