When it comes to people that work in the design industry, they probably fall into two broad categories: those who practise what they preach, and those who muddle through somehow. An example of which category you fall into can be seen by looking at your work area. Is your desk aesthetically pleasing, or formed from chaos?
Naturally, there is some middle ground, but here at IMIDG DESIGN, we like to think we fall into the former category. Our design style is fairly minimal, presenting the content in a way that easily engages target markets without relying on gimmicks or tricks. If something is of use, tell people what it is. Help them make an informed decision. That’s what we excel at.
Running alongside our minimal ethos is how we physically work – how we reduce clutter to get to the key messages. Our desks lean towards minimality, but we do have a little way to go.
One way that we can reduce clutter is to look at using Grovemade products. We recently came across them on Instagram, and have been impressed.
Grovemade started in 2009, a collaboration between friends Joe Mansfield and Ken Tomita. Their vision was to “make cool stuff and have fun doing it” – an ethos we certainly share.
The company now has a global reach and a crew of 20 fun-loving, hard-working employees.
They made some exquisite desktop products including monitor stands, keyboard trays, wrist stands and mousemats, alongside planters, lamps and pen pots. Materials used include walnut – our favourite – and maple.
They have recently branched out into homewares, with an interesting take on organisation.
From the Grovemade website:
Over the last six years, we’ve been on a winding path to find our way. With no outside investors, our bootstrapped venture has had the freedom to become anything we want it to be. As self-started entrepreneurs with backgrounds in digital art and furniture making respectively, Joe and Ken founded the company in the spirit of DIY, and as our team has grown over the years, we’ve never lost that spirit. Rather than obsessing with growth, we pursue the greatest product possible. For us, that means taking control of the whole process, staying small, and revolutionizing how manufacturing can be done.
Rather than the traditional separations between design, manufacturing, and administration, we blend all departments together. Our marketing, photography, writing, and customer service are all done mere feet away from our woodshop. We encourage dynamic roles where jobs intersect, collaborate, and evolve every day. The crappy manufacturing job doesn’t exist here; we all take part in making, and we all contribute in other ways, too.
There are traditionally two ends of the spectrum: Mass produced items are made in sprawling factories by anonymous workers creating efficiency through scale; Crafted products are produced in tiny quantities by skilled individuals with a small audience and limited technical capabilities. We’ve carved out a place for ourselves somewhere in the middle, shipping the highest quality, handmade products worldwide, directly from our hands to yours.
Sadly, at the moment, we can’t find any UK distribution point for their amazing products, but rest assured that when they do reach our shores, we will be at the front of the queue to purchase some of their products. We know that our desks will be greatly enhanced from the clutter-reducing items that have been thoughtfully designed, and expertly created.
Design affects people in different ways. It is subjective and therefore starts discussions. But certain items are universally liked by the vast majority of people. It’s when you know that the design is right.
Imagine a world where great design was the new normal. What could we accomplish when things just work?
Maybe that’s a discussion for another time.
In the meantime, IMIDG DESIGN are always here to make your corporate design work harder for you.
